Public Speaking & Debate Camp

The public speaking & debate camp aims to equip children with the ability to structure arguments, prepare debate cases, research evidence, write rebuttal briefs, deliver speeches and refute opponents. Not only will WCFC students learn debating skills; they will also learn critical thinking skills and general communication skills that will help them succeed academically, socially, and in the real-world.

Daily Schedule


Day Content Purpose
Monday Effective Public Speaking Lesson This session presents fundamental speaking skills and techniques for managing nervousness, and engages students in exercises to build speaking confidence. Students will deliver short, well-structured speeches to start the week.
Tuesday Introduction to Impromptu Speaking and Small Group Exercise Being prepared to speak on a topic with very little time to prepare can set you apart from others. Students practice speaking by doing sales presentations and/or mini debates. Students will be split into two groups and apply the lessons learned in a small group.
Wednesday Small Group Exercise Group instruction includes assistance in researching, writing, structuring and organizing pro and con cases. Instructors guide students in preparing rebuttal briefs for upcoming debates.
Thursday Debate Practice Develop teamwork ability; Students debate almost all day and receive full critiques from instructor. Focusing on areas such as articulation, voice projection, body language, argument structure, refutation, organization and logic.
Friday Debate Rehearsal and Competition Students rehearse arguments on the topic. Families and friends are invited to watch the final competition.

What we offer

WCFC provides 2 snacks and a lunch for each full day camper. Campers dine family-style while sitting with their group and counselors. Students with special dietary needs or allergies may bring their own lunch. Lunch menu will be announced soon!


What to bring

It is important that your child comes to camp after having received a good night’s sleep as well as a healthy breakfast in order to ensure for a fun, safe and energetic day. Our staff wants your child to get the most out of what our camp has to offer. Campers should be dressed in comfortable clothing.
