Course Overview

Ballet Level I

Age 5-8

In this introduction to dance, student learn the fundamentals of ballet. Students develop basic ballet skills through movement, flexibility, and creative, exercises, all in a fun and welcoming environment. Students learn basic ballet technique and alignment through barre and center floor exercises.

Ballet Level II

Age 8-12

Students will practice and refine movements, alignment, positions, and posture. Students will also develop performance skill and live response to music. One year of previous dance experience required.

Instructor Bio

Becci E. Kim

Ms. Kimm’s has been teaching dance in the Washington D.C. area for over 30 years. Her ballet training and experience includes the Royal Academy of Dance, the Royal Ballet in London, the American Ballet Theater, and the Garden State Ballet. She was the owner/director of The Gaithersburg Academy of Dance for 15 years. She was selected as the Chairman of the Mid-Atlantic region of the Royal Academy of Dance. In June 2007, she accepted the position as Ballet Mistress with The Potomac Children’s Youth Ballet, where she trained both Companies I and II and conducted rehearsals for the yearly Nutcracker and spring performances. Ms. Kimm’s students have performed at Wolf Trap National Park, the Kennedy Center, and the White House, and are now members of American Ballet Theater, dancers on cruise ships, owners of studios, dance teachers and dance majors at various universities. Ms. Kimm’s main goal in her teaching is to instill a love for the art in all her students at all levels of training.

Course Overview

Hip-Hop Level I

Age 6-12

Enter the exciting world of hip-hop dance. Students will learn to dance to classic and modern hip-hop, and count the beat, and response to the rhythm of the song.

Hip-Hop Level II

Age 12-18

Students will learn more advanced hip-hop dance. The class will focus on fluid, accurate hip-hop movement and choreography.

Instructor Bio

Michael A. Stokes

Mr. Stokes (a.k.a. Mr. Styles) started ballet at the age of three, and since then has been devoted to the art, expanding his experience into hip-hop, jazz, Chinese dance, and a multitude of other styles. Mr. Styles has trained at the National Ballet Company, Rhythm Nation Performing Arts of Texas Euless, Conservatory of Classical Ballet, and the Ballet Academy of Texas Fort Worth. He has auditioned for and received scholarships from the school of American Ballet, The San Francisco Ballet, The American Ballet Theatre, Cecchetti Council of America, The Julillana Schools, Gus Giordano Dance Center, Debbie Allen Dance Academy, and The University of North Carolina School of Arts. He appeared on the network television reality show So You Think You Can Dance three times. He also appeared as a backup dancer in various music videos with leading hip-hop and pop artists such as Justin Timberlake, Tabi Boney, and Missy Elliot. He toured and appeared on stage with Alicia Keys, Beyonce, John Legend Omarion, Bobby Valentino, Avant and Chris Brown over a period of six years. With unmistakeable charm and passion, Mr. Styles guides his students towards dexterity and helps them discover their own unique styles.
